Dr. Chheany Ung is Double Board certified in both Anesthesiology and Pain Management through the recognized authority in pain management board certification, the American Board of Anesthesiology.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania graduating magna cum laude with honors in Anthropology minoring in Spanish.  He continued his educational career in the field of medicine at Penn State College of Medicine.  Here, he spent the next 9 years undergoing medical school, residency and finally fellowship specializing in pain management with a primary focus on interventional therapies.  

After spending his first 4 years in private practice in Roanoke, he spent a year assisting in initiating and developing Carilion Clinic’s pain management program where he became Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Pain Management with the Virginia Tech School of Medicine.  During this time, he also was named the Section Chief of Pain Management at the Carilion Clinic.  In addition, he was elected to the Virginia Board of Medicine where he continues to serve as a Diplomat on the Advisory Board on Acupuncture.  After this initial year ended, Dr. Ung decided to start his own practice where he now maintains privileges at both Carilion and HCA hospital systems.  He is now the President and Chief Executive Officer of Virginia Interventional Pain and Spine Center.  

Dr. Ung was born and raised in Pennsylvania though his ethnic roots stem from Cambodia.  He enjoys giving lectures and educating the providers and people of Southwest Virginia about interventional pain management focusing on reducing/eliminating the need for opioids in the treatment of both acute and chronic pain conditions.  He has a particular interest in stimulation and ablation therapies that are minimally invasive treatments used to treat degenerative disc disease and arthritis, respectively.  In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, fishing, spending time with family and friends and any and all sports/outdoor activities.
